Instead, she is intelligent, meek, and an exceptional artist. Despite her seeming goodness, some more concerning things cannot be ignored. Samuel is hard-pressed to reconcile her uncanny strength and speed, one missing arm, ambiguous gender, and the mysterious scars covering most of her body.

Samuel forms a deep attachment to the girl with predator eyes and violent outbursts, against his father’s advice. As their friendship threatens to become something more, Samuel discovers the mayor’s dark intentions. Now, he must decide whether to risk his own execution by setting her free, or watch as the girl is used as a pawn in a dangerous game of oppression, fear, and murder.

Samuel and his father entered the cell. Rusty steel bars divided the poorly lit room into two halves: one side for the prisoner. Directly underneath the only window sat a little girl with thick red hair, the strands flowing down her back in large ringlets. Her milky skin was nearly as pale as the snow. Brown freckles decorated the tip of her nose and spread across her full cheeks. Chains shackled her tiny ankles to the stony wall behind her. She wore a ruffled black dress that flared at the hem, stopping well above her knees. The fabric was far too thin and the length far too short to be practical for winter. Her right leg was wrapped in a thick layer of frayed gauze. She was missing half of her left arm, the stub several inches below her elbow.

Her piercing emerald eyes gazed at Samuel.

“We’ve captured a demon, cleric,” the mayor’s voice bellowed. “And I want you to do the exorcism.”
