But at Arcadia High? Being a good girl made me a target. I became a trophy for the spoilt, an end-of-year reward for those willing to play the game: bad boys.

Each side wants me so the other can’t have me. Schoolyard bullies who fight over the same
damn toy.

The city kids have arrived to reclaim what’s theirs, and the country? Well.

Those boys sure don’t give in without a fight.

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

Be still my heart. This book totally got under my skin. I was captivated by this story from the very start.

I am such a fan of L.A. Cotton and one of the things that I love most about her books is her phenomenal writing style. She has such a magical way of bringing the reader into the story. Her storytelling is atmospheric and so full of feeling. I love how smooth and inviting the prose is. The plot of the story was addicting. I couldn't get enough. I really loved the premise of the story and where the author it taking it.

I really loved the characters. Especially Eva. She is overcoming some deep-seated issues and I really connected with her character. Rafe was a little more mysterious but what I saw of him I really liked. He was kind to Eva and he never pressured her for more than she was willing to give. He was hiding some deep-seated issues just like Eva. There was plenty of depth where Eva's character was concerned. I think that she had some great character growth in this book. I really liked the secondary characters in this book and I hope that there is more of them in the second book.

I liked that Eva and Rafe were able to bond in the time that they spent together. While they didn't totally open up to each other they did share something real. I liked the chemistry that they had with one another. It felt natural. With the ending in this book, I really can't wait to see where their relationship goes in the second book. There is definitely going to be a journey.

Overall, this book knocked me off my feet in all the best ways. This story and these characters are so addicting. I was so enamored with this book that I read it in a single sitting. I am so glad that the second book is already out because if it wasn't I would have been a huge mess right now. I am still kind of a mess at the moment, but at least I can get my next fix. This story is some serious kindle crack. I can't recommend this book enough!

Review

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

Holy moly! I seriously didn't think that anything could surpass that first book of this series but this book stole the kingdom of my heart. It kicked down the doors, slaughtered innocent bystanders, and overthrew the monarchy. I'm a bit of a mess and I couldn't be happier about it.

L.A. Cotton is such a gifted storyteller. I don't know how she does it, but she draws me into her stories like a moth to a flame. Just a little taste of one of her stories and I am immediately addicting. Her prose flows like a dream. Her narration is always so inviting. I always know that when I read one of her books that I am going to get top-notch storytelling. The plot of this story was so much more intense than the last. I am always so impressed with the way that she plots her stories and this one was no exception. All the drama in this book hits you right in the feels.

These characters are just everything. I gave my heart away to these characters in the first book and they only ingrained themselves deeper into my heart in this one. I love how easy it is to connect with these characters. Each character, even the secondary characters, have their own distinct personality that I find so refreshing. When you are reading this book you really do fall in love with each and every one of them. I am enamored with this cast of secondary characters and I only hope that Cotton decides to give us their stories as well as Rafe and Eva's. I really loved how Eva and Rafe's characters progressed in this book.

The romance in this story is so heartwarming and tragic at the same time. It's hard to get into without going into spoiler territory, but let me just say that their love story is one that you want to root for. They are so perfect for each other and they have such a beautiful and deep connection. Tensions were high at the end of this book and I am eager to see where this romance goes.

Overall, this story gave me everything I wanted and more. I am so floored with this book and this series has fast become a favorite. This is a series that I know I will revisit in the future. The characters and the story just stay with you long after you've turned the last page. I really hope that L.A. Cotton decides to write more rockstar romance novels because this series is just amazing!

Review

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

I can hardly believe that we have reached the end of Rafe and Eva's journey. Their story has been such a wild ride.

L.A. Cotton puts her all into her stories and it shows in her storytelling. Her writing style is one that I connect with so easily. Her writing invites you in and makes you feel so at ease. I am blown away by her writing skills time and time again. She plots out her stories so carefully and she always surprises me with what she comes up with. I am never disappointed. I really like where she went with this story and I love how Levi's story was set up for the next book.

These characters have come to mean so much to me. I have been completely captivated by them. They have worked their way into me so much that I can feel them in my bones. I honestly hope that L.A. Cotton decides to give each member of Black Hearts Still Beat their own story. I may have to riot if she doesn't. At least we know that Levi's story is on the way. I loved how full of emotion this book was. The characters expressed their emotions so viscerally and devastatingly. The main characters had so much depth and such incredible character growth. Some of the side characters even had some amazing growth.

The romance in this book was heart-melting. Rafe and Eva finally get to be together and they don't have to hide. Even though there are still a lot of hurdles for them, they still manage to devote themselves to one another. Rafe had some awesome romantic gestures in this book that had my heart singing.

Overall, this is a riveting story that really packs a punch. A rock and roll bad boy and a country sweetheart are both broken souls that find their way together and find that their two broken halves make a whole. It really is such an uplifting and heartwarming story at its core. This is a rockstar romance that you won't be able to put down. I cannot wait for Levi's book!

Series Review

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

This is such an emotionally gripping story. I was immediately drawn into this story. This story has such a complex plot. It was constructed intricately and it really packs a punch to one's emotions. There is so much drama in this story but it is all presented in ways that toy with your heart. These characters are ones that you will be so invested in because they are so raw. They are not flawless or without broken pieces. They really resonate with the reader which makes the story that much more impactful. This is an incredible series that I can't recommend enough.

Series Blitz, Excerpts & Giveaway: The False Series by Meli Raine

Title: False Memory
Series: The False Series #1
Author: Meli Raine
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Narrators: Andi Arndt & Sebastian York
Release Date: August 15, 2019

Blurb

It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.

Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a funeral arrangement when I see one.

I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.

I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.

I fake my amnesia.

Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.

The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me “remember.” I hate lying to him.

But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.

Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.

In more ways than one.

Mom rushes into the room, moving the man aside, her face coming so close, my eyes losing focus. I want to look at her. Want to beg her to make him leave.
Want to yell and scream and claw my way out of this bed to get away.
“Lily! Lily! It’s Mommy. I’m here, sweetie. I’m here.” Her hand goes to mine, clasping it like she has a million times before.
This time, I squeeze. I will it. I close my eyes and send the full force of the universe’s sense of mercy into one impulse, one set of muscle fibers, one aching, desperate movement.
“TOM!” Mom gasps. “She squeezed my hand! Lily, did you squeeze my hand on purpose? Do it once for yes, twice for no!”
I squeeze once.
“Oh, Lord, thank you!” Mom babbles, tears rolling down her face, splattering on my cheek, stinging where the tape pulls my skin. “Squeeze twice if you want to see Daddy!”
Squeeze squeeze.
“She’s awake ! She’s coming out of it! My Lily is waking up!” Mom shouts.
“We have to tell everyone! We have to keep her awake. Tom! Doctor! Help!”
I look behind her. A crew of white lab coats has appeared, jabbering. And next to them, the man in dark clothes. I know I can squeeze.
I know it is light. I know it is.
I know something else, too.
I know who that man is.
Because that is the man who shot me in the head.
The man who wants me dead.
And his eyes are staring right into my soul.
Blink.

She thinks she’s fooled me. But I’ve known all along.

Almost.

Lily is hiding something, a secret so big, she came out of a year-long coma and her first instinct was to lie.

Who does that? Someone who is afraid. No—not afraid.

Terrified. And it’s my job to take that fear away.

My partner and I have spent countless man-hours hunting down the cold-blooded killer who did this to her. Meanwhile, Lily’s spent her waking hours recovering. Getting stronger. Getting smarter.

Staying beautiful.

Never get involved emotionally. That’s my dictate. Never get attached.

When you realize you’re caught in a triangle, it turns out there is no exit.

Crossing a line is easy. Holding a line takes strength.

Lily’s shooter knows that she’s my weakness.

And he’s about to exploit that by breaking a line and escaping, claiming a hostage in the process.

Excerpt

If unicorns had a flavor, it would taste like kissing Lily.
Her essence is still on the tip of my tongue as I watch the layered response Lily has mastered. Observe her as that beautiful mind works to line all the pieces up and execute the subterfuge, living in two selves, one ever vigilant, one struggling to stay quiet.
For months now, I’ve felt it. Sensed it.
Now I can taste it, too. Lies have a flavor.
And God help me, I want more of the deliciousness of Lily.
But those lies come with an aftertaste, a bitter acrimony that has an overriding power.
My own words ring in the air like a gong as I wait: When were you going to tell me you've been faking the amnesia, Lily? Before or after I sleep with you?
“Sleep with me?” she squeaks, the words catching me off guard. I assumed she’d deny the lying.
Not talk about my fantasies.
“You want to talk about that?” I choke out, amused and sickened. “You’ve been lying to me for close to a year and all you want to talk about is sleeping with me?”
“You brought it up!”
She’s got me there.
“How about this fake amnesia bullshit, Lily? How about we talk about that before we discuss getting sweet between the sheets?”
She blushes.
I get hard.
This—this is why I should have recused myself from this damned assignment long ago. I knew this day would come. I knew I’d have to call her on the lying.
Worse than that—I knew I wouldn’t be able to help myself.

Being locked in a room with a dead body is not on my bucket list.
Being
locked in a room with a faceless corpse, the dim light making his exposed, bloody skull bones gleam like rubies, is definitely not on my wish list.
The scream that wants to come out turns inward, helplessness stopping it somewhere in my chest, comforted by my heart, which only wants it to go quiet. Screaming won't
fix this. I can't find an escape by making noise.
Reality has a way of dominating.
I look down at the dead man.
Who is very, very real.
I move gently on the chaise, taking the deepest breath I can, holding it for too long.
Suspending myself in time and space feels like the only out. I can't actually leave.
Second best is closing off my air supply, shutting my eyelids, not moving.
Freezing in place gives me an illusion to grasp, the fleeting seconds important.
My hand slides under a throw pillow. The cool haven of hidden fabric makes me shiver.
A black spider, all too familiar, comes off the pillow my hand is under.
That makes me shiver even more.
I jump up, shocked by the intrusion of another living being.
The door calls out to me.
The spider crawls down one leg of the chaise, then makes its way dispassionately along the tip of the dead guy's shoe.
In order to get to the door, I have to go around the dead body. In order to move, I have to feel the sensation of his blood on my skin. When I bend my arm, the dried blood on my shoulders and neck crackles. It puckers, like child's glue spread over skin and allowed to dry for fun. For amusement.
This is anything but amusing.
