Garth Nix is such an inspiring storyteller. He is an author that I have been wanting to read for a long time since I've heard wonderful things.
This author has a beautiful writing style. I loved the writing voice. The choice of words really made the prose feel poetic.
I really loved the world-building in this book. The entire concept for the book gives the nerd in me a huge rush of excitement. I loved the magic system and the religious aspects of the book. Everything came together so seamlessly in the story. I loved how the book loosely felt historical with the magical elements woven into it.
The plot of the story was really thrilling. It did get slow in places, but overall there was enough action and adventure to keep the story moving. Most of the big reveals for the story happen in the last ten percent of the book so there is definitely a build-up to it.
I didn't connect with the characters as much as I would have liked, but I didn't dislike them. I was invested in their story and each of the main characters had interesting aspects about them. I loved the diversity in the book.
Overall, this is a compelling story with original and unique fantasy elements. I am eager to read more books from this author.
