Top Shelf by T.D. Colbert is now live!
Tyson
A one night stand--actually, it was a one-weekend stand--with my best friend changed my life.
And ended our friendship.
Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Sadie Blackwell. But years later, I’m finally piecing my life back together. I love my job, and I’ve been named the commissioner of the new youth hockey league in town.
Then she walks back into my life and begs me to pretend to be her boyfriend…and her husband walks in behind her.
Sadie
My life is so far from what I imagined it would be. Eight years ago, I had the chance to be happy, to have everything I ever wanted, but I let it slip through my fingers. Now, the only place for me to go is back to Crooked Creek.
To him.
After what I put Tyson Calway through, he’s the last person I should ask for a favor. Especially one like this. But it has to be believable. It has to be him.
When we’re together, I’m transported back to the weekend that changed everything between us. Before I left him, and broke both of our hearts. Before I went back to my fiancĂ©.
And now, I'm afraid the only person falling for our charade is me.

I was excited to jump into this one. I have read a few books from this author before back when she was publishing as Taylor Danae Colbert and one of them in particular really struck a chord with me and I haven't forgotten the book to this day.
Initially, I connected with Colbert's writing style straight off the bat. It was very personable and down-to-earth which resonated with me. Thinking of the book as a whole, I have to admit that the book was a little too fast-paced for my liking. I felt that the pacing affected the rest of the book in a lot of ways. It felt like a condensed version of a whole story, which isn't surprising since this book is pretty much the size of, if not a tad larger, than a novella. I didn't know the page count of this book before I opted to read it as an ARC but I don't normally read many novellas because I know that the world-building tends to lack depth to me. Which was the case in this book for me. That is just a personal preference though so just take my review with a grain of salt. Even though that issue affected my reading experience, I still enjoyed this story and it is definitely worth a read.
Tyson was an absolute teddy bear in this. He was so devoted to Sadie throughout the story even when he should have been hurt or angry with her. He was so loyal and it melted my heart. He always just wanted her to be happy regardless if she chose to be with him or not and he always supported her decisions. While Tyson was such a likable character, I did not feel the same way about Sadie. She was a rather annoying character that I didn't connect with at all. Her decision-making process in the book rubbed me the wrong way at times. I wanted to like her more but I really couldn't. I enjoyed the side characters in this book a lot. I loved the family aspect throughout the entire book. Tyson's family was the best and it will be great to read their books in this series once they are available.
As far as the romance goes, if you like a second-chance love story or a friends-to-lovers romance then I think you will enjoy this one. Since I wasn't feeling Sadie's character, the romance felt ungenuine to me. At least from Sadie's side of things. I felt the opposite where Tyson was concerned. He was the definition of a book boyfriend but romances need two and if you don't have all the right ingredients then you can't bake a cake, if you know what I mean.
This is the second book in the Calway Family series but it can be read as a standalone. I haven't read the first book in this series yet and I didn't feel lost where the characters are concerned.
I generally enjoyed this book even if there were a few things that didn't mesh with me.
Overall, this is a fast-paced love story with a cinnamon roll hero who deserves all the love. This book is full of some of my favorite tropes: fake relationship, small town, found family, and friends-to-lovers. This is a second-chance love story with strong family themes. I think that if you enjoy any of the above tropes and a fast-paced story then you'll enjoy this book!
