Almost twenty years after the barrier between Earth and the Otherworld fell in the Fae Wars, Budapest is balancing on the precipice. A battle for dominance is brewing between the elite fae and the privileged humans in Eastern Europe. The prejudice between the sides is bubbling with hate and violence.
Nineteen-year-old human, Brexley, has grown up in privilege, but not without heartbreak. After being orphaned, she is taken in by General Markos, living in a walled city rife with power grabs and ruthless political games. Then one night the course of her life changes, and Brexley is thrown into the most feared prison in the east. Halalhaz, the House of Death—where you go in but don’t come out.
She must learn to live with the worst of fae and human criminals. The rule of hierarchy puts humans on the bottom, where the only way to survive each day is to make alliances with the fae.
Here she meets the sexy, vicious legend, Warwick Farkas. A myth among man and fae. He is as brutal, cruel, arrogant, and as lethal as the lore says he is, ruling the prison with unchallenged authority. Brexley can’t deny an intense draw to him, one that might cost her life.
If The Games don’t take her out first—
A fight to the death where only one survives.

MY REVIEW

I was beyond thrilled to dive back into the incredible world that Stacey Marie Brown started with her Darkness series, Collector series, and her Lightness Saga. I have scarcely felt such a deep connection to a fictional world like I do with this one, and I knew that this new series was going to strengthen that tenfold.

The awesome thing about this series is that although it is set in the same world as three of her other series, it also stands completely on its own. This series takes place twenty years after the events that ended in the Lightness Saga. While most of her other series in this world take place in the Seattle area, this series takes place in Budapest. I can't begin to express how riveting it was to experience this world from a different perspective in a totally new locale. The world-building in this series is phenomenal. Brown uses rich descriptions and carefully placed information to totally immerse the reader in the world. Reading this book is like being thrust into the pages of the story where you experience everything along with the main characters like you are living it right along with them.

I was so very impressed with the characters in this book. It can sometimes be hard to open yourself up to new characters in new worlds, but these characters grab your attention from the very start. Brown writes these characters so fluidly and expertly that they take a little piece of your heart as you read their stories. It's no small thing for an author to write characters that are so multifaceted. Not only will you love these characters because they are so easy to connect with but because they are so realistic. They have flaws, struggles, and strengths that make them come alive and jump right off the page.

I have such a deep appreciation for Brown's storytelling. She uses all the tools at her disposal and crafts superior stories that you will latch on to and devour with reckless abandon. She dazzles her readers with complex characters, clever and interesting plots and ideas, and atmospheric world-building. This book is another slam dunk that she can add to her repertoire that boasts kick-ass heroines, brooding alpha males, and side characters that you would die for. This book gave me such an intense book hangover and I cannot wait for the rest of this series to be released. If you are new to Stacey Marie Brown's books then I suggest starting with this book or pick up the first book in her Darkness series. The book dragon inside you will thank you later.

Stacey Marie Brown is one of my insta-buy authors. I will read anything this lady writes. Who are some of your go-to authors?
